A Highly Educational and Interactive Presentation for Students at San Francisco Plantation

Louisiana History Preserved along the Mississippi River Road

Plantation Tour

Tour this National Landmark which has been painstakingly restored to it's original grandeur. Imagine walking through all sixteen rooms furnished with period antiques that are one of the finest collections in the south. See five magnificent hand painted ceilings and wood working known as false marbling.

During the tour, students learn the history of a young girl named Louise von Saybold who arrived with her new husband Valsain Marmillion, a Frenchman. Louise writes home to her family pre and post civil war. The one hundred letters that have been translated tell the true story of the deep south.

Also enjoy a presentation in the cabins for the enslaved located behind the big house with displays of inventory of slaves, their trade, and worth. There is a live performance by an actor portraying the heroine Harriet Tubbman called "A Flight to Freedom."

Cajun & Creole

Students will experience demonstrations showing the different styles and flavors of Cajun and Creole cooking. Students will see how Jambalaya is prepared using pork, chicken, andouille, smoked sausage and rice. They will also learn about "herbs and file" grinding in a hollowed 100 year old cypress stump. Demonstrations are followed by a delicious jambalaya lunch in the Sugar Mill Pavilion.

Every Day Life

Enjoy a view of how every day life occured on a plantation. See a blacksmithing demonstration, which includes bending and striking hot iron to fashion nails, tools and other things needed on the plantation. Learn about net making and its relevance to life in the 1850's. A professional net maker will show different styles and techniques during an interactive presentation. At the end of the day students will play old-fashioned games including the original baseball game called Town Ball, Graces, Hoops and many others. An unforgettable lesson for your students.
